Packing tips for your carry on bag

Carry on bag

How big can a carry on be?

The requirements for carry on luggage size vary slightly depending on the airline (within an inch or two). However, most major airlines’ standard domestic carry-on bag size is 22″ x 14″ x 9″, which includes the handle and wheels. Luckily, there aren’t any weight restrictions, but remember that you need to be able to lift it to put it overhead!

Below are the carry on bag requirements for a few major airlines as a quick reference, but feel free to check out this article for a complete list!

  • American Airlines carry on size: 22″ x 14″ x 9″
  • Delta carry on size: 22″ x 14″ x 9″
  • JetBlue carry on size: 22″ x 14″ x 9″
  • Southwest carry on size: 24″ x 16″ x 10″ (woohoo!)
  • United carry on size: 22″ x 14″ x 9″

Not sure how many carry on bags are allowed? In addition to a carry-on bag, most airlines also allow you to bring one personal item like a backpack, purse, or small duffel bag. However, the general rule of thumb is that it needs to be able to fit underneath the seat in front of you, so don’t get too crazy.

Additional TSA carry on rules

In addition to the TSA carry on size requirements listed above, there is also a carry on liquid size limit that you should keep in mind if you’re planning on bringing your toiletry bag onboard with you. Check out the complete list of TSA carry on rules here.

The TSA liquid rule allows you to bring a quart-sized bag of liquids, aerosols, gels, creams, and pastes in your carry on bag. However, they must be in travel-sized containers no larger than 3.4 ounces. Anything bigger will need to go in your checked luggage.

TSA carry on restrictions

Wondering what is NOT allowed on a plane carry-on? First and foremost, any sharp objects such as knives, scissors, and razors are not allowed in your carry-on. This includes items like box cutters, ice picks, and even certain types of knitting needles. Additionally, tools such as hammers, wrenches, and screwdrivers are also prohibited. Flammable items, including lighters, matches, and any kind of fireworks, are strictly forbidden.

Certain sports equipment, including baseball bats, golf clubs, and hockey sticks, are not permitted in the cabin. Other prohibited items include self-defense tools like pepper spray, firearms, and ammunition. Hazardous materials, such as bleach, spray paint, and tear gas, are also banned.

To avoid any issues at security checkpoints, it’s essential to check the specific regulations of your airline and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) guidelines here before packing your carry-on bag.

What to pack in a carry on bag for flight

Most important carry on essentials

Travel wallet

A travel wallet is indispensable for organizing and keeping your passport, ID, cash, and credit cards safe. I love this particular wallet for travel from Amazon because it has pockets for both credit cards and cash, holds your passport, and has an AirTag holder so you can keep track of it at all times. Additionally, this RFID travel wallet is an excellent choice for international travel.

Travel pill case

With all of the flight cancellations these days, I would highly suggest carrying on any prescriptions or medications you might need throughout your trip in case your luggage is delayed or lost. This travel pill case is perfect for keeping all of your medications organized, and it’s the perfect size to throw in the bag and take it with you anywhere you go.

Best carry on essentials for health & safety

Hand sanitizer

I have yet to get COVID during or from travel, and I genuinely believe it’s because of the obsessive amount of hand sanitizer I use. I’m not a doctor, so I’m not at liberty to list out best practices, but I personally use it any time I am eating or drinking. It’s that simple! Touchland is my absolute favorite hand sanitizer, as it’s not sticky, doesn’t have that gross “alcohol smell,” and doesn’t leak.

Sanitizing wipes

Some other carry on travel essentials you don’t want to forget are sanitizing wipes. Airplane cabins, including tray tables, armrests, and seatbelt buckles, can harbor germs and bacteria from numerous passengers. Using sanitizing wipes allows you to quickly disinfect these high-touch surfaces, reducing your risk of exposure to illnesses. Additionally, sanitizing wipes are convenient for freshening up your hands when soap and water aren’t readily available.

Best carry on essentials for entertainment

Noise cancelling headphones

When it comes to travel tech, noise cancelling headphones should be at the top of your carry on packing list. I’m an Apple girly, so I personally always travel with the AirPods Pro or AirPods Max. Both options have noise-cancelling capabilities, fantastic sound quality, and long battery life. The AirPods Max are especially great for long flights, as they’re a little more comfortable to wear for long periods of time.

Airfly

An Airfly is one of the best travel gadgets for long flights! This compact device allows you to wirelessly connect your Bluetooth headphones or earbuds to in-flight entertainment systems so you can enjoy your favorite music, movies, or podcasts without being tethered to the seatback screen. It’s a game changer, especially on longer flights where the airline’s headphones might not be the most comfortable or high-quality.

Portable power bank

Anyone else go into panic mode as soon as their battery starts to get low? Yeah, me too, which is why I always travel with a portable charger now. I love this one from Amazon because it has wireless charging capabilities and built-in cables for easy charging. Plus, it has USB and Type C ports, making it compatible with most devices, and a digital display showing the battery life.

Apple iPad Air

An iPad is another of my favorite travel tech gadgets I always pack, as it allows me to catch up on all my trashy TV shows (haha) and maybe some reading (if i’m in the mood). I especially love the iPad Air (I told you I was an Apply girly) because it has a long battery life, is really lightweight, and is super easy to pack. It’s also great to have on hand on the off chance that I actually want to do some work or answer any emails.

Best travel accessories for comfort

Travel pillow

Comfort is my top priority when I travel, so I always make sure to bring a travel neck pillow with me, whether on a flight or the road! What’s great about this one is that it can be compressed to fit in a travel-friendly case, has a washable cover, is lightweight, and can be adjusted to support any sleep style.

Travel blanket

Another thing I like to bring on my flights (mainly international) is a travel blanket. No matter how many layers I have on, I always seem to freeze to death on planes! I like this 2-in-1 travel blanket from Amazon because it doubles as a blanket and pillow, has a sleeve that slides right onto your carry-on and is easy to clean. Not to mention, it’s incredibly soft and cozy, too!

Travel sleep mask

If you’re going to attempt to get some shut-eye on your flight, an eye mask will definitely come in handy. This one from Amazon has a 3D hollowed design contoured to fit your face perfectly and prevent light leakage. It’s also made with memory foam and has an adjustable strap, making it incredibly comfortable for long periods of time.

Cozy socks

Some other things to pack for a trip in your carry on bag to ensure comfort during your flight is a cozy pair of socks. As we all know, Airplane cabins can get chilly, and warm socks will help to keep your feet comfortable and toasty. They also provide a more home-like feel, making it easier to relax and even sleep on long flights. Plus, slipping into cozy socks can be a nice way to unwind and feel refreshed upon arrival.

A few of my favorite things

Snacks

I carry snacks with me pretty much everywhere I go (you don’t want to see me hangry, haha), but I especially love packing Verb energy bars, Chomps, and Smart Sweets when I travel. Verb energy bars are particularly great to take on the go because each bar is equivalent to a shot of espresso, offering the ideal pick-me-up.

Water bottle

Another thing I always make sure to bring with me anywhere I go, whether it’s the gym, running errands, or traveling, is a water bottle. I’ve been using a Hydroflask for years and not only does it keep your drink cold for up to 24 hours, but it’s so much more cost-effective than buying water at the airport. I also like to put in a packet of Liquid IV for additional hydration!

Travel beauty essentials

A couple of travel size products I recommend adding to your carry on bag to keep you looking and feeling your best include a good moisturizer,  a nourishing lip balm, a hydrating facial mist, and deodorant, as cabin air can be very drying. For longer flights, I’ll also typically bring dry shampoo, a hairbrush, and a toothbrush and toothpaste to freshen up.
